Seattle University

Welcome to this community. We are the Seattle University Faculty Union, which includes faculty of all non-tenure appointment types, including lecturers, instructors, adjuncts and all other contingent faculty.
Contingent faculty at Seattle University voted to form a union with SEIU Local 925 to improve our working conditions and the learning environment of our students, in accordance with the mission of our university.
Unfortunately, our administration has done everything in their power to stop us. Arguing that it was exempt from the jurisdiction of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) due to its religious character, the University delayed us from forming our union for several years. Once the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) certified our union, Fr. Stephen Sundborg announced plans to take the NLRB to court rather than simply sitting down with the faculty and negotiating with us over improvements.
In contrast to the behavior of our University, the Catholic Church has long recognized union organizing as one of the essential means for the promotion of social justice. Beginning in Rerum Novarum, the Church has consistently supported efforts of workers to join together to defend their rights and protect their dignity. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has written, “no one may deny the right to organize without attacking human dignity itself.”
Despite continued opposition from our employer, we believe, that through unionization, we can actively live our University’s social justice mission for our students and for ourselves. Join us!
